An Incredible Return

Last night I witnessed an Incredible return.

I was treated to a sneak preview of the new Incredibles 2 movie. I was not disappointed.

The original graced the screen 14 years ago – before the Captain was even a father. I remember borrowing a friend’s 5 year old so that I could go see it (I’m not sure why I thought I needed a kid to see a movie, but I digress…)

I may have laughed harder than he did. I loved the characters, the storyline, the humor. AND IT HAD SUPERHEROES!

I fully expected it to have a sequel, and so I waited. And waited. And waited.

Nothing.

And then last night, the Incredible family returned. It was like they hadn’t left. There was Bob (Mr. Incredible), Helen (Elastigirl), Violet, Dash, and Jack Jack navigating their double life as the everyday family and the Incredible superhero family.

I’m offering no spoilers, but here is the official synopsis:

Everyone’s favorite family of superheroes is back in “Incredibles 2” – but this time Helen (voice of Holly Hunter) is in the spotlight, leaving Bob (voice of Craig T. Nelson) at home with Violet (voice of Sarah Vowell) and Dash (voice of Huck Milner) to navigate the day-to-day heroics of “normal” life. It’s a tough transition for everyone, made tougher by the fact that the family is still unaware of baby Jack-Jack’s emerging superpowers. When a new villain hatches a brilliant and dangerous plot, the family and Frozone (voice of Samuel L. Jackson) must find a way to work together again—which is easier said than done, even when they’re all Incredible.

It is rare when a sequel lives up to the strong showing of the original. This movie does that and more.

Parents will especially appreciate the plight of families adjusting to changes at home (growing baby and change of the “guard” at home) and school (the new math and dating).

The plot itself is compelling. There were several times that I found myself on the edge of my seat. I gasped a few times. I laughed, well, A LOT. Every superhero story needs a good villain and Incredibles 2 doesn’t disappoint in that department.

What I especially loved was the opening message from the cast before the movie begins (again, no spoilers). As you watch this familiar family, the audience is treated like family. You are there to witness the triumph, the humor, the humility, and the struggle.

I’m not sure who will love it more – kids or parents, but check out Incredibles 2 this week in theaters!
